Dooky Chase’s: A Taste of Culture and Soul

When you step into Dooky Chase's Restaurant in New Orleans, you're experiencing more than just dinner — you’re experiencing a taste of history. Since 1941, this legendary spot has been serving up authentic, mouthwatering Creole cuisine, with a new flair added to great tradition by each generation. More than that, Dooky Chase's is a cultural powerhouse and historic center that has welcomed iconic changemakers and critical discussions on civil and economic rights. Dooky Chase’s even served as the first gallery in New Orleans to showcase Black artists, and you will still see many works of art throughout the restaurant today.

The dining room has seated freedom fighters like Thurgood Marshall and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as stars like Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and Duke Ellington. More recent A-list guests include Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Beyoncé and Jay-Z...and now me (haha)!

Here is what we tried:

DOOKY’S TOAST TRIO
Assortment of bread served with a trio of spreads; eggplant farci lump crab meat, tomato concasse black olives and boiled shrimp, and minced oysters and garlic

CRAWFISH ÉTOUFFÉE
A delicate combination of crawfish tails, onions, green peppers and spices in a flavorful sauce, served with steamed rice

SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN

Creole marinated fried chicken with your choice of side (mac and cheese is a no brainer! Perfectly creamy, cheesy and seasoned — the star of the entire meal for me!)

Soul food needs no explanation - you’ll feel it in your soul. And Dooky Chase’s definitely passes the test!
